Tunesday: Tyler Lyle - "When I Say That I Love You"

This is the first post in a new series called Tunesday! Each Tuesday, I will feature a single track that has not appeared on the site before. The song can be from any time, genre, place, or artist. These are just damn good songs that deserve some serious attention. Enjoy!

There's no better song to kick off this series than Tyler Lyle's "When I Say That I Love You." This track is capable of stopping you in your tracks, listen after listen. This version, the one recorded for a Fuel/Friends Chapel Session back in March, consists of just Lyle's voice, guitar, and a quiet violin. His voice is literally perfect, and tugs at your heart strings as he sings about a love he has to leave. It is beautifully bittersweet. Enjoy.

Hey Marseilles - "Hold Your Head"

The gents from Hey Marseilles are in the midst of prepping their next full length record! Finally! The first peek of the new disc, unless single "Elegy" will be on there, is a brand new video the band filmed in Oregon. The new track, "Hold Your Head" continues in the folkestral vein of their debut, and features frolicking strings, and Matt Bishop's always tender croon. I'm getting antsy for their new album! Looks like it will be a winner. Watch our interview with the band at Sasquatch here.

Miriam Bryant - "Finders Keepers"

Miriam Bryant is Scandinavia's response to Adele. The English-born, Swedish-raised singer's voice is fantastic, strong, bold, and dark. While she only has one single out, "Finders Keepers," Bryant has been picked up by EMI Music in Europe and is currently invading radio stations all over Sweden. Thanks to this little thing called the Internet, she's starting to get some fans stateside as well. While Adele is an obvious (and awesome) comparison, Bryant's voice and songwriting are both darker, a tad sultrier, and just as catchy. Enjoy the video for "Finders Keepers." Great Songs Under 2 Minutes

Not many hit songs are less than 3 or 4 minutes, but not every great song takes that long to get its point across. In fact, there are some fantastic songs that will stick in your head much longer than they last on the record. If you don't have time to check out a bunch of 10-minute long epics, look no furthur! Here are my some of my favorite songs that are less than 2 minutes long.

Neutral Milk Hotel - "The King Of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1"
Time: 2:00

Possibly one of the best album openers ever, this quick, lively tune got the amazing album In The Aeroplane Over The Sea off to a running start, complete with Jeff Mangum's droning voice and creepy lyrics.

Neutral Milk Hotel-"The King Of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1"

The Head And The Heart - "Cats And Dogs"
Time: 1:56

This track leads off the Seattle group's debut album, sums up their sound quite well, and even includes animal noises!

The Head And The Heart-"Cats And Dogs"

The Lumineers - "Flowers In Your Hair"
Time: 1:50

Another opening track, this rollicking, sweet love song is one of the best songs on their fantastic debut record

The Lumineers-"Flowers In Your Hair"

Nick Drake - "Harvest Breed"
Time: 1:37

This album, Pink Moon, is one of my favorites of all time, and it runs only 28 minutes long! All the songs are brief, but they will stick with you for years.

Nick Drake-"Harvest Breed"

Hey Marseilles - "Someone To Love"
Time: 1:54

This charming ballad by the Seattle folkestral group sound like their version of Death Cab For Cutie's "I Will Follow You Into The Dark." While it is from a different perspective, it has the same honest romanticism.

Hey Marseilles-"Someone To Love"

Manchester Ochestra - "100 Dollars"
Time: 1:50

This quick track about needing an extra buck starts out soft and acoustic, then builds quickly to a huge climax. He just needs some money!

Manchester Orchestra-"100 Dollars"

Town Hall - "Pandora"
Time: 1:45

This was the first song I heard from this young group of NYU students, and it got me hooked. While it didn't make their album, it is still lots of fun and doesn't take long to get the message across.

Pinback Announces New Album

Pinback has announced that they will be releasing a new album, Information Retrieved, on October 16th. Last year on Record Store Day, the San Diego-based band released two EP's with the same title. This will be their first full length release since 2007's Autumn Of The Seraphs. It is safe to say that this is an album we are greatly looking forward to. Throughout their career, the band has been remarkably consistent, packing all their albums with gems. They are also quite a pleasure to see live. Below, hear the track "Sherman" from their Information Retrieved Pt. A EP. Also look out for tour dates to be announced soon!

The xx on Conan

Last night, The xx made their first TV appearance in support of their upcoming album, Coexist, out September 11. They played the single "Angels" on Conan. The beautiful performance shows that the band has built up some serious stage experience.

Judgement Day - "Demon Fire"

A while back, I was introduced to string-metalheads Judgement Day when they opened for a Pinback show in Boston. Their unique combination of classical music and metal created something intriguing and devilish. Now, their latest track, "Demon Fire," turns up the evil even more while introducing a new, Spanish-tinged style. The single will be on their upcoming album, Polar Shift, out July 31. Can't wait to see what these guys have in store for us next. You can purchase their previous albums here

The Best Free Music Apps

There have been thousands of lists posted on thousands of sites about the best apps to download to your mobile device. But I've noticed some apps that have been snubbed a spot on a lot of lists. These apps are all fairly recent releases, and are extremely useful for music obsessives and casual fans alike. And they're all free!

Songza

Why you should get it: The perfect playlists to fit your every mood

Leading the pack of Pandora challengers, Songza's goal is to play you the right music at the right time. Centered around the Music Concierge, the app guides you to the perfect playlist for whatever you may be doing, whether it be working out, cooking, eating, studying, partying, or anything in between. You can also browse the thousands of professionally-curated playlists by genre, mood, decade, cultural distinctions like cities or music festivals, or even funny categories like "This Will Piss Your Parents Off." They have playlists for just about everything, and new playlists are added daily. The best part: there are no audio ads! Take that Pandora.

Songkick

Why you should get it: Never miss a concert again

I am a concert junkie, and for those like me, who never want to miss another concert, Songkick is the perfect cure. After making a free account online or on your phone, you can have the site scan your phone, Facebook, or Spotify account for artist names. You then enter your location, or wherever you want to go to concerts, and you're all done! Songkick will notify you whenever an artist you like is coming to your city. I have never been let down, and they often notify about a show before the artist has even announced it! I'll never miss a show again.

Thrillcall

Why you should get it: Special offers galore

This very new app is leading the way when it comes to special offers and giveaways. After choosing your city (more will be available soon), new offers appear every day. Whether it is a VIP ticket you can enter to win, a surprise show, or a discounted drink voucher, Thrillcall is definitely worth checking every day.

TastemakerX

Why you should get it: Now you can prove it when you say "I knew about them first"

This one is a little silly, but can also be frighteningly addicting and a way to discover new artists. TastemakerX is a music trading game in which you can buy and sell shares of groups like stock, and watch them grow as the band gains attention. Designed for those who need to prove that they were fans before anyone else, the game is actually quite entertaining. It's really nice to see your favorite artists rise and make profit (yes it is fake money) off your knowledge.

Milo Greene Is Making A Movie!

Milo Greene, fresh off the release of their debut album (fantastic by the way), released two music videos, both very nature-filled clips about a man living in a cabin. Today, they made this special little announcement about those videos:

"So we released videos for 1957 & Silent Way a few weeks ago. Some of you connected the dots and asked if they were pieces of a larger puzzle... Well, you were correct. We made a film that uses our entire album as a single piece of music."
-Milo Greene

It looks like Milo Greene is making a movie! I'm quite excited to see how everything ties together. You can watch the trailer for the film, titled Moddison, below.

Skrillex - "Trung"

The latest track to surface from dubstep king Skrillex is a bit different. The track, "Trung," is a bit more upbeat than his usual stuff, and features some cool new sounds! It does of course use his trademark growl, as well as melodic synths that a reminiscent of "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites." There are two versions of the track: One instrumental, and the other featuring Wale. The rap definitely puts a different spin on things, and both versions are worth checking out. Enjoy!

Skrillex-"Trung (Instrumental)"

Julia Easterlin

Thank goodness looping technology exists, because one of Julia Easterlin's voice is not enough. The indie-pop singer uses a loopstation to build full, multi-part works out of nothing. She is one part Regina Spektor, one part Tune-Yards, and a dash of Feist. A pretty sweet combo, I know. While her recorded tracks are fun, bouncy pop with a sense of adventure, her music really comes to life in person. Watching her build up her tracks one layer at a time is fascinating, like watching a piece of artwork take shape from a blank canvas.

Last night I saw her brief performance at The Bitter End in New York, NY. While the venue was pretty ill-suited to such a quiet show, she made me a devoted fan in about 30 seconds. Her voice is so precise that she layered all her songs in only one take. And backed by tight drums and bass, her sound grew far more powerful. Her cover of the Pixes track "Break My Body" was a definite stand out, as was "Eyes On The Prize," a track you can download for free right here! Enjoy!

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist Trailer

Having just dropped the first single from their debut album, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also shared with us a little video trailer about the record. It chronicles the recording process, and describes how much energy, time, and effort went into The Heist, out October 9th. It also gives you an idea of the overall sound. Can't wait for October. Check it out.

The Best Kanye West Tweets Of 2012 So Far

Kanye West doesn't Tweet very often. But when he does, he either goes on hundred-tweet rants or drops nuggets of wisdom that could come from none other than Yeezy himself. He is also one the most infamous Tweeters, with 8 million followers and countless lists naming him as one of the best accounts to follow. In light of all this, we have decided to compile a list of the best, most hilarious, or most insightful Kanye West tweets of 2012 so far. Soak in the wisdom. Got any good ones that we missed?

Woah. I think he's on to something!

Well this is embarrassing.

And. . .?

Great idea! Because we all know, if your phone knows the answer, then you do too.

I knew I wasn't the only one wondering 'what clothing items does Kanye hate?'

Like spelling?

It's the smiley face that really makes this one a gem.

Update: Good thing we made this list already! Seems as if Mr. West has deleted all of his tweets! See for yourself!

Freelance Whales Announce New Album

If you, like many others, fell in love with Freelance Whales' adorable Baroque-pop 2010 debut, Weathervanes, then you will be excited to know that they have announced their followup album! Diluvia will be released October 9th, and sees the group embracing their electronic side more than ever.  The first single, "Locked Out," definitely mixes things up for them, but keeps the charming feel. Listen to the track below, and download your own copy for the price of your email. Enjoy!

Gotye vs. Carly Rae Jepsen

Unless you have been living under a rock, Carly Rae Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” and Goyte’s “Somebody That I Used To Know” are old news. Enter Pomplamoose, an indie duo hailing from California who decided to mix things up a bit with a refreshing mashup of the two aforementioned songs. In their version, titled “Do Not Push,” the band skillfully weaves their own vocal renditions of the two songs to create a not-your-average mashup.

Warning: The accompanying music video is…ummm….creative.

Bonus Fun Fact: The name Pomplamoose is derived from the French word for grapefruit!

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - "Same Love"

Macklemore, who announced his new album, The Heist a few days back, has now dropped a new track. The song, "Same Love," is the MC's take on gay rights. It is extremely touching, and another step forward in the genre's transformation towards acceptance. Macklemore also released a statement to go along with the track. You can check it out here. This is a must listen. Enjoy.

The lineup is headed by Pulp, Hot Chip, Yeasayer, Girl Talk, James Murphy, and Sleigh Bells with a total of 22 artists on board. Bahamas - "I Got You Babe"

Bahamas is seriously making the rounds. Riding the success of his latest album, Barchords, Afie Jurvanen is making appearances on radio stations, blog videos, and everything in between. He recently stopped by KCRW to record an always-lovely rendition of "I Got You Babe." Enjoy his smooth voice and fantastic guitar work.

Coachella Mystery Announcement

In typical Coachella fashion, the largest festival on the West Coast has announced something special: An announcement! Tomorrow at 6PM PDT, something will happen. Of course, the internet will be frantically attempting to predict the announcement until then. Many sources think that the promoters behind the fest, Goldenvoice, may be moving the festival from Indio, CA to a new location. After a bit of conflict with the city a few weeks ago, there were talks of moving the festival but they soon after dissipated. Nobody knows what will come with the announcement. A third weekend? A new location? Early lineup teaser? A second Coachella somewhere else? More tickets released? I guess we will have to wait and see.

IT'S A CRUISE!

Mumford & Sons Announce New Album

The album took over a year and a half to record, due to a hectic tour schedule that took the group around the world multiple times. According to the band, the new album will have a similar sound to Sigh No More, but will include heavier emotions and a touch of darkness. Can't wait to hear this one!

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Announce Debut Album

After rising through the ranks and becoming one of the hottest new voices in rap music today, Macklemore has finally announced his debut album with producer Ryan Lewis. Out October 9th, The Heist will be followed by an enormous (and their first) world tour (dates above). As announced on KEXP this morning, their first full length has been completed and will be sent to be mastered in the next week or two. They will have a release show in their hometown of Seattle, WA at the WaMu Theater on October 12th. I know I can't wait to hear what they have next. As the MC said on air, this will be the beginning of "a whole new chapter."

Update: The Heist has been released! You can buy the incredible album right here. As of right now, the album is #1 on iTunes! Quite an amazing accomplishment for a completely independent artist.

Blitzen Trapper - "Girl In A Coat" Music Video

Portland's Blitzen Trapper have released a new video from their latest album, American Goldwing, this time for "Girl In A Coat." The clip shows drummer Brian Koch's grandfather. See what Koch says about the video:

"I was struck by how, even though so much had become blurry, confused or completely fallen away from his memory, some things remained. Just shy of his 100th birthday, Daniel Elkayam and I began to create a video from my grandfather's perspective, blurring the boundaries of time and space in memory. 'Girl in a Coat,' with its wearied narrative of retrospection, seemed the perfect match for the concept."

Reviewed: Dylan Owen

Gramercy Theater, New York, NY

Ever since I downloaded Dylan Owen's latest EP, Keep Your Friends Close, I have been intrigued by the young MC's poetic, powerful rhymes. He has wisdom beyond his years, and a focused seriousness that is hard to find in any musician these days. Last night at the Gramercy Theater, his performance seemed to polarize the audience a bit, separating those with more sophisticated taste from those in attendance simply to hear headliner Watsky crack some jokes. While not everybody seemed prepared for Owen's intense subject matter, those who were were likely thinking the same thing I was: this kid is damn good.

Opening with the heart-stopping "Bookmarks," Owen plowed through his unfairly short 30 minute set with grace, charisma, and focus. He mostly stuck to his new material, yet he also played a few fan favorites from his previous album, Senioritis. When Owen threw wristbands out into the crowd, an attendee in front of me hit me in the eye trying to grab one. At a normal concert, that would make me pretty pissed, and distract from the music for a minute. But not this time. Not even a hit to the face could take me away from Owen's poetry.

Listen to the whole EP below and remember, you can download the entire thing for free right here

Foxes - "White Coats (Xaphoon Jones Remix)"

Xaphoon Jones, the beat-making half of Chiddy Bang, has been busy. Aside from touring with Chiddy, he has been releasing remix after remix, and they are all awesome! My personal recent favorite is a remix of "White Coats" by Foxes. Xaph takes the British pop singer's catchy track, adds some dirty synths, and cuts her voice in a way only he can. Enjoy!

Download the track here.

Purity Ring - "Fineshrine" Music Video

Purity Ring, the dark electronica duo that has been buzzing quite a bit lately thanks to a few incredible singles, has released a music video for their latest track, "Fineshrine." The clip is dark and creepy, like the music, yet also beautifully filmed and quite intriguing. Their album drops July 24th. You can preorder it from iTunes here. Check it out.

Milo Greene - "Silent Way" Music Video

Ahead of their debut album dropping next week, Milo Greene has released their second music video, this time for "Silent Way." The clip, like their video for "1957," is immersing, taking the viewer into another world for a few minutes. This time, the world involves a man who every once and a while, just needs to float on a lake. Take a look! You can preorder the album here.

Greylag Look Session - "Tiger"

Greylag, a lovely group we had the pleasure of catching and interviewing at Sasquatch, recorded a Look Session a few weeks ago while in Austin. The video shows a lovely rendition of their tune, "Tiger." Their debut EP, The Only Way To Kill You is out now!

Ellie Goulding Covers Active Child

Sultry British singer Ellie Goulding has returned with new material after quite a bit of touring behind her successful debut album. On the new track, a cover of Active Child's lovely "Hanging On," Goulding sings beautifully over all-consuming synths, only to be followed by a powerful verse from grime rapper Tinie Tempah. This song is definitely going to be huge, and will no doubt expand Goulding's already huge fanbase. If you are a fan of either Goulding or Active Child, you'll want to hear this.

Cold Specks - I Predict A Graceful Expulsion

Cold Specks is just the stage name of London-based singer/songwriter Al Spx, but those two words somehow describe her music perfectly. Her debut album, the therapeutic I Predict A Graceful Expulsion is already one of my favorite albums of the year. Her soothing voice isn't typical; it has a raspy and old quality that give Spx's voice a resounding sense of wisdom and grace. Her songwriting takes influence from gospel, yet it has been described as doom-soul, thanks to a very dark lyrical message. The entire album is so calming and definitely worth listening to over and over. This is a very "wash over you" kind of record. The kind of album that sets a mood so strongly that is literally takes you over as you listen.

Cold Specks-"Holland"
Cold Specks-"Blank Maps"

The Tallest Man On Earth - "Leading Me Now"

For a Carmel Guitar promo, Kristian Matsson recently recorded an intimate version of "Leading Me Now," off his latest, and fantastic album, There's No Leaving Now. Be sure to catch his live on his current tour because he is even better in person.

Old People and Dubstep

It is no surprise that dubstep fans are almost exclusively young people. The new, innovative sounds that artists like Skrillex create are extremely polarizing, especially by generation. In this absolutely hilarious clip, a few elderly folk are played a few Skrillex tunes. They share their opinions, dance moves, and frightened reactions. Some even become fans!  This was way funnier than I was expecting. Some grandparents are awesome.

Bahamas - "Already Yours"

If you liked what you heard of Bahamas when we posted about him the other day, a new video worth watching has surfaced. Jurvanen visited Studio 360 with his singers to perform "Already Yours," a very tender and thoughtful cut off his debut album, Pink Strat. Enjoy!

Skrillex vs. Adele - "Set Fire To Everybody"

Let's say you like Adele's voice, yet you think her songs lack a certain intensity that is present in other music today. Luckily you can now have both! Someone who goes by ca7 has created a mashup of epic proportions by combining Skrillex and Adele, two of the most popular artists of the past few years. The song combines Adele's "Set Fire To The Rain" with Skrillex's signature womp. If you thought Adele sounded bitter about her breakup before, think again.

Conner Youngblood - "Gold"

Conner Youngblood, a fantastically-named singer/songwriter from Dallas, Texas has just released a superb track, "Gold." The summery, heavily-layered song is a perfect soothing anthem for laying out in the sun. I would recommend looking out for this guy. His relaxing tracks have been heating up quite a bit in the blogosphere. If you like what you hear, you can also download his debut, Sketches pt.1, for free here. Enjoy!

Stream Milo Greene's Debut Album

Milo Greene will be releasing their long awaited (at least by us!) debut album on July 17th. Before then, however, Hype Machine has the entire album streaming for your listening pleasure. I know its early, but debut of the year anyone? Listen below and let us know what you think.
