New Music Wrap-Up: October

As the month of October comes to a close, I have decided to reflect here on the best music I have heard for the first time in the past month. While not all of the music was released this month, it was new to me, and I hope you find some new gems in here too! It was a great month for rap, with two of the most exciting debuts in a long time seeing release: Macklemore and Kendrick Lamar. This month's single-maker was definitely Ellie Goulding, who released her second album, Halcyon, displaying a darker, more emotionally heavy side to her writing. Enjoy!

October by the numbers:

New songs added to my library: 308

Most listened to track: Ellie Goulding-"Figure 8"

Top 3 albums added:

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - The Heist

Ellie Goulding - Halcyon

Kendrick Lamar - good kid, m.A.A.d city

Best Surprise of the Month: Adele-"Skyfall"

Funkiest Track: Big Boi-"Mama Told Me (feat. Kelly Rowland)"

Best Remix: Beyonce-"Party (Kaytradamus Remix)"

Chillest EP: Different Sleep - INFINITE Download Here

Album I'm most excited for in November: Big Boi - Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors

6 Mashup Albums You Should Download Right Now

Xaphoon Jones - Mixtape Vol. 1

The first of three excellently diverse mixtapes from the Chiddy Bang beatmaker was his most mashup-heavy. And there are some real gems. A lively jam mixing Bob Marley and MGMT, as well as Biggie rapping over Passion Pit and Beyonce. My personal favorite however, blends Kanye's "Testify" with "Reckoner" by Radiohead. Check it out!

Wick-it The Instigator - Grindhouse Basterds

Possibly the coolest mashup concept I've seen, Grindhouse Basterds combines various Quentin Tarantino quotes and soundtracks into funky hip-hop tracks. Using tracks and wonderfully selected quotes from Kill Bill, Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, Inglorious Basterds and more, this is a must for any Tarantino fans. Listen to "Look At Mexico Now." I'll give you one guess as to what rap that uses.

Neutral Bling Hotel - In My G4 Over Da Sea

At first I was skeptical. Neutral Milk Hotel didn't seem immediately like it could really be made into hip-hop material. But Neutral Bling Hotel went and proved me wrong. It definitely has a few bumps, some not so great tracks, but overall it is an impressive work. It also features some pretty sweet song names like "Untitled Paint Job," "My 1st Aeroplane," and "Oh Dougie," which you can hear below.

Wick-it The Instigator - The Brothers of Chico Dusty

This is the album that really kick started my love of mashups (And it was one of my very first posts on this site!). Being a fan of Big Boi and The Black Keys predisposed me to like this of course, but Wick-it really ties the artists together perfectly. Big Boi's clean, funky flow contrasts the gritty distortion of the Keys. Now when I hear the Black Keys tracks, I can't help but expect a little Big Boi action on top. Now that's a successful mashup. Check out "Afraid Of The General" below.

Brooklyn. Chicago. London.

This album, brought to our ears by Urban Noize, ties together three artists who are all extremely passionate about their hometowns: Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Adele. Adele's orchestral tunes provide the instrumental as well as the choruses, while the Throne trades off verses. If a collaboration like this, between three of the worlds biggest stars, ever happens, the world may explode. Hear "Hometown Glory" below.

Terry Urban - Born Ready To Die

When Lana Del Rey was making waves with her controversial debut and SNL performance, Terry Urban had the wise idea of pairing her with a true classic, The Notorious B.I.G. Her moody vocals and instrumentals work pretty nicely with Biggie's deep swaggy rhymes. Have a listen to "FTW."

Conner Youngblood - Sketches Pt. 2

If You Like: Fences, Bon Iver, Freelance Whales

Conner Youngblood first appeared on my radar earlier this year with his single "Gold." His soothing, genre-bending style got me awfully curious to find out more about the Texan's history. Unfortunately, the Yale student remains quite private, not revealing much information online. The one thing I do know, however, is that he recently released his second album, Sketches Pt. 2. The collection of eight tracks continues where his last Sketches left off. Combining reverby vocals with acoustic guitar, spastic audio manipulation, and occasional dubstep influence, Youngblood has created something captivating. The song that really takes the cake here (besides "Gold") is "Proportions." Sparse, slightly off-time guitar plucks and finger snapping surround the beautifully sung line, "Proportionally, I've always been, and will always be the same." He even turns a cover of "I Gotta Feeling" into a quiet shoegaze anthem. Hell, every song is great. While his voice may sound awfully lonely, his fan base is growing consistently and I could see the guy gaining a pretty serious following. Hop on the bandwagon!

Pinback has announced that they will be releasing a new album, Information Retrieved, on October 16th. Last year on Record Store Day, the San Diego-based band released two EP's with the same title. This will be their first full length release since 2007's Autumn Of The Seraphs. It is safe to say that this is an album we are greatly looking forward to. Throughout their career, the band has been remarkably consistent, packing all their albums with gems. They are also quite a pleasure to see live. Below, hear the track "Sherman" from their Information Retrieved Pt. A EP. Also look out for tour dates to be announced soon!

The album took over a year and a half to record, due to a hectic tour schedule that took the group around the world multiple times. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis Announce Debut Album

After rising through the ranks and becoming one of the hottest new voices in rap music today, Macklemore has finally announced his debut album with producer Ryan Lewis. Out October 9th, The Heist will be followed by an enormous (and their first) world tour (dates above). As announced on KEXP this morning, their first full length has been completed and will be sent to be mastered in the next week or two. They will have a release show in their hometown of Seattle, WA at the WaMu Theater on October 12th. I know I can't wait to hear what they have next. As the MC said on air, this will be the beginning of "a whole new chapter."

Update: The Heist has been released! You can buy the incredible album right here. As of right now, the album is #1 on iTunes! Quite an amazing accomplishment for a completely independent artist.

Cold Specks - I Predict A Graceful Expulsion

Cold Specks is just the stage name of London-based singer/songwriter Al Spx, but those two words somehow describe her music perfectly. Her debut album, the therapeutic I Predict A Graceful Expulsion is already one of my favorite albums of the year. Her soothing voice isn't typical; it has a raspy and old quality that give Spx's voice a resounding sense of wisdom and grace. Her songwriting takes influence from gospel, yet it has been described as doom-soul, thanks to a very dark lyrical message. The entire album is so calming and definitely worth listening to over and over. This is a very "wash over you" kind of record. The kind of album that sets a mood so strongly that is literally takes you over as you listen.

Cold Specks-"Holland"
Cold Specks-"Blank Maps"

Conner Youngblood - "Gold"

Conner Youngblood, a fantastically-named singer/songwriter from Dallas, Texas has just released a superb track, "Gold." The summery, heavily-layered song is a perfect soothing anthem for laying out in the sun. I would recommend looking out for this guy. His relaxing tracks have been heating up quite a bit in the blogosphere. If you like what you hear, you can also download his debut, Sketches pt.1, for free here. Enjoy!

The Avett Brothers Announce New Album: The Carpenter

The Avett Brothers announced yesterday that they will be releasing their sixth full-length album, The Carpenter, this September 11th, a follow-up to the highly regarded I and Love and You released in 2009. The alt-country band from Concord, North Carolina was founded by brothers Scott and Seth Avett. As you can hear on the second track from the new album, "Live and Die," the band embraces their Southern roots with some country twang, a touch of folk, and good old rock 'n' roll.

To support The Carpenter, The Avett Brothers will be touring across the country, including visiting the lovely Gorge Ampitheatre (one of our favorite venues!). I would highly suggest checking out one of their shows; seeing them in Dallas last Fall was one of the best decisions I've ever made. The band is simply beautiful live!

Delta Rae

Gospel stomp. It sounds intriguing doesn't it? Hailing from Durham, North Carolina, Delta Rae are preparing to storm the country with their powerful Mumford & Sons meets The Civil Wars sound. Last week, they released their debut album, Carry The Fire, a diverse collection of Southern-influenced, folk-rock tunes. Led by the humongous single, "Bottom Of The River," and singer Brittany Hölljes' brassy voice, the six-piece group is sure to make lots of fans on their upcoming US tour (dates below). And not just one of them can sing. At least four members switch off vocal duties! Enjoy the awesomly Southern and intense video for "Bottom Of The River."

The Helio Sequence Announce New Album: Negotiations

The Helio Sequence, the Portland duo who's most well-known album Keep Your Eyes Ahead came out in 2008, have announced that they will be releasing their next album, Negotiations, in September 2012. I was a big fan of the band's last album, and am excited to see what The Helio Sequence comes up with next. The announcement via Sub Pop's website described the record as "a meditation on those inner dialogues (hence, Negotiations) with solitude, memory, misgivings, loss, atonement, acceptance and hope." Pretty intriguing, eh? We saw The Helio Sequence play at Sasquatch this year and they are set to play Bumbershoot as well, but their full tour dates will be published in the very near future. The band released an album promo video, check it out below!

Below, check out the leading track set to be on the new album, "Sleeping Ute," which was noted as Best New Track by Pitchfork on Twitter yesterday. I'm going to try and see them at their last stateside show at the Greek Theater; I'm really digging this! Think you'll want to catch a live Grizzly Bear? Check out the band's tour dates below!

The xx Announce New Album: Coexist

The xx, the British trio who released their debut album xx in 2009, will release their second album Coexist in September of this year. After taking a brief hiatus, they created their own studio and recorded new songs, and are very excited to present fresh music to eager fans with a substantial tour schedule. As we posted about in December, the xx presented a demo version of their song "Open Eyes," set to be on Coexist. Check it out here!

Sigur Rós will release their upcoming album, Valtari, on May 29th. Until it drops, you can stream the gloriously epic album in its entirety, thanks to NPR. This album, their first in four years, is a solid addition to their discography, featuring Jónsi's trademark falsetto and slowly growing, monolithic arrangements. Any thoughts?
