Allie X - "Prime"

If You Like: Katy Perry, Tove Lo, CHVRCHES

Canada isn't always the go-to place to find killer, intelligent pop music, but in this case, there's no better place. Allie X, a native of Toronto, has just released one of the most exciting, sugary-pop tunes that I've heard in quite some time. Her latest single, "Prime," utilizes falsetto vocals, hard-hitting synths, and a perfect sing-along melody to firmly lodge itself in your brain. Following up her other awesome track, "Catch," her new song ups the ante, feels poppier, and could easily show up on smart indie radio stations soon. While the powerful vocals bring Katy Perry to mind, the lyrics are are smarter than that, and the synths are more interesting, placing her comfortably between the Swedish  Tove Lo, and the Scottish CHVRCHES

The refrain, "Forget what I want, give me what I need, and it should be fine," is something you will hear being belted from cars and showers starting now.

New Song From Phoenix - "Entertainment"

Phoenix has just premiered the first single off their upcoming record, Bankrupt!, due out April 23rd. The track sounds like classic Phoenix and is catchy as hell! Do you think this is a good start to one of the most anticipated albums of the year? Check it out below and let us know what you think!

Kenna - "Long Gone"

If You Like: Kele, Theophilus London, School of Seven Bells

While you may not have heard of Kenna, he was actually nominated for a Grammy in 2009 before falling out of the news for a few years. He has been featured in quite a few projects, yet has eluded the mainstream. Until now. His latest single, "Long Gone," brings to mind Kele Okereke's solo album and Theophilus London's classy swag. The video, a black and white self-proclaimed Alfred Hitchcock-like film, reinforces the song's somber, yet meditative tone. Check out the video below and let yourself get sucked in.

Kopecky Family Band - "Heartbeat"

If You Like: Givers, The Lumineers, Drew Grow & The Pastors Wives

Kopecky Family Band, a group I was first introduced to when they opened for The Lumineers, has come out with a rolicking, fun new single called "Heartbeat." Their debut full length album, Kids Raising Kids, will be released on October 23rd, and this is our first taste. Despite their name, they are not actually a family; they only jam together like one. Their fun, lively sound translates excellently to the stage and makes it easy to see why these guys are on their way up.

You can download the single for free below in exchange for your email address.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - "Thrift Shop"

The Mack is back. As we announced a while ago, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis will be releasing their debut album, The Heist, on October 9th. We heard the gay rights anthem "Same Love" and now we get to hear about Mr. Haggerty's awesome thrift shopping skills. The single definitely shows Ryan Lewis expanding his sound from his usual piano melodies towards something quite a bit more old school. And it works quite well. Check it out! Also watch the music video, one of the funniest I've seen in a while. What do you think?

Foreign Slippers - "It All Starts Now"

If You Like: Ben Howard, Angus & Julia Stone, James Vincent McMorrow
Sweden is hot right now. The indie music scene in Scandinavia is simply bursting with young talent, quite a bit of it falling into the indie pop wheelhouse. This track, from Sweden/London-based Foreign Slippers, is a classic mellow-to-anthemic tune that is nothing but charming. Aside from fantastic vocals by frontwoman Gabi Froden, and a rousing melody, the percussion sets everything off, keeping the song driving along. And it includes handclapping which is always a good sign. The track is off their new album, Farewell To The Old Ghosts, which you can buy right here. Enjoy!

Pinback - "Proceed To Memory"

On October 16th, Pinback will return with their first album in five years. The upcoming album is titled Information Retrieved and will be released on Temporary Residence Ltd. The first single from the disc, "Proceed To Memory," shows the band exploring new, and promising territory. On one hand it is classic Pinback, with precise, simple guitar lines, but it is also quite a bit bigger than usual. Stream the new track via Rolling Stone here!

Hey Marseilles - "Hold Your Head"

The gents from Hey Marseilles are in the midst of prepping their next full length record! Finally! The first peek of the new disc, unless single "Elegy" will be on there, is a brand new video the band filmed in Oregon. The new track, "Hold Your Head" continues in the folkestral vein of their debut, and features frolicking strings, and Matt Bishop's always tender croon. I'm getting antsy for their new album! Looks like it will be a winner. Watch our interview with the band at Sasquatch here.

Judgement Day - "Demon Fire"

A while back, I was introduced to string-metalheads Judgement Day when they opened for a Pinback show in Boston. Their unique combination of classical music and metal created something intriguing and devilish. Now, their latest track, "Demon Fire," turns up the evil even more while introducing a new, Spanish-tinged style. The single will be on their upcoming album, Polar Shift, out July 31. Can't wait to see what these guys have in store for us next. You can purchase their previous albums here

Freelance Whales Announce New Album

If you, like many others, fell in love with Freelance Whales' adorable Baroque-pop 2010 debut, Weathervanes, then you will be excited to know that they have announced their followup album! Diluvia will be released October 9th, and sees the group embracing their electronic side more than ever.  The first single, "Locked Out," definitely mixes things up for them, but keeps the charming feel. Listen to the track below, and download your own copy for the price of your email. Enjoy!

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - "Same Love"

Macklemore, who announced his new album, The Heist a few days back, has now dropped a new track. The song, "Same Love," is the MC's take on gay rights. It is extremely touching, and another step forward in the genre's transformation towards acceptance. Macklemore also released a statement to go along with the track. You can check it out here. This is a must listen. Enjoy.

Purity Ring - "Fineshrine"

Purity Ring is undoubtedly one the most buzzed about bands at the moment. The dark, synth-loving, Canadian duo has only released four singles, all expected to appear on their debut album, Shrines, out July 24th. Today they released "Fineshrine," yet another chill, dark, track that combines deep, liquid synths with singer Megan James' simple, poppy vocals. The expectations about their debut release are only growing, and if these singles say anything, it is that they are up for the challenge. Check their singles out below, as well as their tour dates opening for Dirty Projectors.

Brother Ali - "Stop The Press"

Brother Ali, one of the freshest and most exciting voices to come from the Rhymesayers crew is back. His last full length album, 2009's Us, was his most successful to date, and with production from Ant of Atmosphere and Ali's soulful, political flow, it was a great listen. Now, he has announced that his next record, Mourning In America and Dreaming In Color, will be released on August 13th. The first single, "Stop The Press," gives us an update on Ali's last few years and explains where he has been. Can't wait to hear more!

Milo Greene - "Take A Step"

One of our favorite and most exciting up and coming groups, Milo Greene, has given us another wonderful peek at their upcoming debut album, out July 17th. The new song, "Take A Step," is one we have heard at each of their live shows, and is yet another awesome cut from the LA-based folks. It brings to mind Local Natives, yet keeps things gentle and very beautiful. Enjoy!

Passion Pit - "I'll Be Alright"

Passion Pit has released a second single from their upcoming album, Gossamer, out July 24th. The new track, "I'll Be Alright," is a spastic barrage of synths and pitch-altered vocals. Surprisingly, it would not have been too out of place on their debut album, although it features only glimmers of singer Angelakos's glorious falsetto. It's a lot of fun though!

Animal Collective - "Honeycomb/Gotham"

Animal Collective has reappeared with a new two-track single, out June 26th. The two songs, "Honeycomb" and "Gotham," are streaming for free below. Enjoy!

Passion Pit - "Take A Walk"

Passion Pit has dropped the first single from their highly anticipated sophomore release, Gossamer, out July 24th. While the track keeps the synth-heavy feel of their debut, there is definitely some exploration of new sounds going on. They have also announced a string of tour dates to accompany the release. Enjoy!

Brother Ali - "Not A Day Goes By"

Brother Ali, one of the finest members of Rhymesayers Entertainment, the label that is home to Atmosphere, Grieves, Blueprint, and many more, has released a hard hitting new video. The single, "Not A Day Goes By," off an album to be released later this year, shows a new, heavier side to Ali. Especially since his last work was the tender, soulful, The Bite Marked Heart EP, this is definitely a new direction for the MC. Ali may be Muslim, but he goes HAM on this one.

Good Old War - "Can't Go Home"

Philadelphia folk trio Good Old War will release their upcoming album, Come Back As Rain, on March 6th. Until then, we have the pleasure of hearing a few great sunny singles! "Can't Go Home" is filled with beautiful simple harmonies, and "Calling Me Names" is made for a concert singalong. To support the album, the group is embarking on a very extensive Spring tour with The Belle Brigade and Family of the Year.
