Pickering Pick - Tiger Balm

Ballad-master Sam "Pickering" Pick is at it again! Last week, Yer Bird Records released Tiger Balm, Pick's latest collection of perfect acoustic rainy day music. For fans of Mr. Pick, this album is less a departure from his previous work than it is a refinement. The ten tracks are consistent, carefully crafted, quiet, catchy acoustic tunes. The difference here is the collection of the album as a whole. The tracks are more connected and Tiger Balm feels more like a cohesive work of art than his previous albums. For those of you who are not familiar with Pickering Pick, you can read our original post on him here and stream his previous albums on his website. For new listeners I recommend starting with either Tiger Balm, or his last offering, The Boy In The Back. Enjoy!

Grieves - Together/Apart

Benjamin Laub, known as Grieves, has perfected his art. The rapper has teamed up with producer Budo to create Together/Apart, one of the best rap albums so far this year. While his style remains in the same vein as his previous few albums, he works outside of the box a bit, including more variety in the production of his tracks and many more hooks than ever before. After seeing Grieves open for Atmosphere a few months back and preview some of this new material, I had been eagerly awaiting its official release. I can now say that Grieves has lived up to all my expectations, and is now ready for the big time.

Beirut - "East Harlem-Single"

After what feels like an interminably long break to learn all the tricks and trades of an Emergency Medical Technician, the other half of the Galley is back. And without much fanfare, though he deserves as much as possible, so is Zach Condon.
Last week Beirut released a two-song single that complements their substantial catalogue so far and continues to build on frontman and brain Condon's exceedingly unique taste. If anything, the two songs are even more accessible than previous work by the group, all the while maintaining those goddamn excellent horn melodies. All around superb stuff. Give it a listen.

Reviewed - The Civil Wars with James Vincent McMorrow

Anthology, San Diego, CA

Last night I heard three of the most beautiful voices I have ever heard in concert. And they were all in the same show! I had the pleasure of catching The Civil Wars in concert at the intimate Anthology venue. But first, and definitely not least, James Vincent McMorrow took the stage to open for the Nashville-based duo. Running through most of his debut album, Early In The Morning (Buy on Amazon), McMorrow kept the show simple with just him and his guitar. His uniquely beautiful voice hushed the crowd and left them in awe. I didn't think it could get much better until he closed with an incredible, completely unplugged version of "If I Had A Boat".

While nobody in the audience wanted to see McMorrow leave the stage, Joy Williams and John Paul White of The Civil Wars won the hearts of the audience after singing their first word. With voices that McMorrow described as being "genetically modified to go together," their harmonies were out of this world. The two were meant to sing together, putting on a completely flawless show. They played nearly all their songs, and even put their own twist on incredible covers of "You Are My Sunshine," "I Want You Back," and "Billie Jean". If you have the chance to see this show live, you will not regret it. They will tear the venue down. Buy their album, Barton Hollow here.
